The Weeknd released his fifth album Dawn Fm this January. Republic Records and XO teamed up with the goal of servicing and following up After Hours' recording work. By then his greatest hit had been "Blinding Lights".
The album features guest vocals, Jim Carrey's thought-provoking narration, and the voices of Tyler, the Creator and Lil Wayne, as well as Quincy Jones' reflections on personal experiences.
The way in which the singer has managed to highlight the essence of the music of the songs on the album is through an aesthetic with existential themes. Defined by the author as a wait towards purgatory, the singer expressed through his songs the existentialist vision he has about life.
“You have been in the dark for way too long, It's time to walk into the light and accept you fate with open arms. - Jim Carrey voice in the song Dawn FM
The transcendental and important themes of the philosophy behind the album are complex and difficult to project. Existentialism is mixed with psychedelia and the quality of the music videos is to be recognized and through the shots the ontological concept behind the songs is highlighted.
Purgatory is a place where souls hide almost permanently, almost. This is how the artist manages to establish a kind of limbo in which the people in the video find themselves. Remaining for life there in the free existence without living is possibly what The Weeknd captures in his videos. But there is something else that can be seen in the shots, that light and almost dead nature that remains in this cold and skeletal place, as if in a trance-like state.
Also The Weeknd always shows us the romantic side with a soft and penetrating beat, and in this album songs like "Is there someone else?" and "Don't break my heart" continue that characteristic line of his. Below is the complete playlist for you to enjoy.
