• Sarah Brightman - Fleurs Du Mal (Live in Vienna)

When it comes to musical fusions, Fleurs Du Mal cannot be missing as a reference, especially if we include their live performance, which is a work of art and was the starting point of the special concert "Symphony: Live in Vienna", recorded on January 16, 2008.

    The Lyrics

Fleurs Du Mal is a song written by Sarah Brightman and Klaus Hirschburger and composed by Frank Peterson, Martin Himmelsbach, Matthias Meissner, Tony Schwarz.

The lyrics lend themselves to a profound interpretation of the self, Flowers of Evil is the translation of the title and during the song explores the narrator's reflection on his inner struggle with contradictory thoughts and feelings that he can't seem to let go of as the flowers of evil return ("Should I feel this way?", "Will I ever be free?").

These flowers of evil seem to be an internal representation of psychological discomforts and situations that disturb the being's life and do not let him be truly ("We run until it's over and the flowers of evil do not let you be").

It also refers to situations and actions of the past that come back again ("what has been done will come back again", "Will I be free someday?") indicating that when you are about to have peace the flowers of evil come back to take it away.

These flowers of evil can be loves, memories, situations or actions and you may be thinking - this happens to me too, how do I escape? Following the analogy that they are flowers, in order for them not to grow, you have to stop watering them by not remembering over and over and over again in thought and feeling.

    The Music

The introduction of the song consists of two parts, the first one is a gothic style organ until a thunder bursts and opens the way to the second part which is an epic symphonic rock and the base of the chorus.

In the verses we can appreciate Sarah's extraordinary interpretation in which her voice is accompanied only by the symphonic orchestra that being quite calm opens space for Sarah to handle her voice with different colors that makes us feel the internal struggle of which the song speaks.

We get to the chorus where symphonic rock enters again but with two new elements, Sarah's voice and a 12-piece choir. Sarah and the choir enter into a dynamic in which she initiates and the choir responds, giving the song an even more epic touch.

At the end of the song Sarah closes with an operatic scream, accompanied by the orchestra and the gothic intro of the beginning. A great job by Frank Peterson and company.

    The Performance

The performance was held at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna Austria, which is built on the ruins of two earlier churches and whose history of renovations and expansions has resulted in a combination of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, bringing history, art and atmosphere to the concert.

The producers did a wonderful job with the organization, lighting, cameras and sound as well as the placement of the band, choir and the Ambassador Orchestra of Vienna. As Fleurs du mal is the opening song, Sarah in a red dress, during the song moves from the entrance of the church and concludes at the front where the stage is located. Combining everything is a jewel for the senses, here is the video for you to enjoy.
