The Latin Grammy Awards, known affectionately as the Latin Grammy, are one of the most prominent events in the Latin American music and entertainment industry. These awards, which recognize artistic excellence in Latin music, have become an annual celebration that brings together artists, songwriters, producers and fans from around the world. But what exactly are the Latin Grammy Awards and how does the nomination and awards process work?
The Latin Grammy Awards are an extension of the Grammy Awards, the prestigious U.S. music industry awards. Established in 1989, the Grammy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in a wide range of musical genres. In 1989, the Latin Recording Academy took the initiative to create the Latin Grammy Awards to honor Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking artists worldwide.
The Latin Grammy nomination and award process is a meticulous and curious exercise. It begins with the selection of voting members of the Latin Recording Academy, composed of music industry professionals. These members are responsible for nominating their peers in a variety of musical categories ranging from pop to regional Mexican music, jazz to classical.
Voting members then review the eligible recordings and cast their votes to determine the nominees in each category. Finally, during the Latin Grammy ceremony, the winners are announced and presented with the coveted golden gramophone.
That being the case, the nominees for the most popular categories this year are:
